The books are closed for the 2017 Relay for Life of Greene County with a final tally of $45,788.52 raised for the American Cancer Society. The funds will be used by the ACS to serve cancer patients and survivors, for research, and for advocacy.
The total tops the 2016 total by $4,000. The number of teams at the Relay grew from 13 to 19, and those teams raised $21,309, an increase of almost $3,900 compared to last year. Sponsors provided another $10,300.
A first-year Relay team – Sprinters, Walkers & Trash Talkers (SWATT) of Scranton Manufacturing – was the top fundraising team with $5,051. Home State Bank Team Sharon Towers raised $4,182, the Holy Walkamolies raised $2,105, Team Durlam contributed $1,525, and the NHS Stompers raised $1,488.
Other teams surpassing the $1,000 mark were Team Velda’s Varieties with $1,162 and Christ Lutheran Team Hope with $1,065.
The Spirit Squad from Greene County High School raised $940.
Every registered team raised more than $325. Teams included Fiber Fanatics, Tom and Kathy’s Aktion Club Team, Kim’s Krew, Team Spot of Tea, Landus Cooperative, The Gardens of Jefferson and Greene County Elementary ABC.
“The Relay for Life really is a county-wide community effort, and we can all be proud of that total,” said Peg Raney, chair of the event leadership team for the past four years.
Planning will begin soon for the 2018 Relay for Life, slated for Saturday, April 21, at the Greene County Community Center. The first planning meeting is Thursday, Sept. 21, at 5 pm at the Community Center. All are welcome to bring new ideas.
